Miami Horror

I knew it sounded straight out of the 80s, but to find that it looks it too was a surprise. Not a new track, but a good one. Play it loud and shake your disco booty. I can't believe I just wrote that.

Little Birdy

I'm just loving the new Little Birdy tune Brother, she just has such a beautiful voice. The new album Confetti is gonna come out in May of this year...pretty exciting stuff.

"...and float down grand street in daylight"

Matt & Kim are indie pop from Brooklyn. Oh yes they are. And something about them is just so so so adorable. I'm not usually one of those people who find other fully grown adults adorable, but right now I am breaking the rule book. I think this is because, as is often said, Matt & Kim are just so happy. They look happy, sound happy, move happy and make you feel happy.

The first single Daylight off their second album Grand has already done a considerable tour of duty on the blog front, but the rest of the album is damn solid and should be added to your collection. Other neat tracks include Lessons Learned, Turn This Boat Around and I'll Take You Home. Heck they're all great! Each with a slightly different combo of drums, pop, keys and synth. Some soft. Some loud. Most with Matt's almost punkish vocals. A few almost instrumentals.

If you already know and love Daylight, how bout checking out the last track on the album Daylight Outro, which is a remix of the one we love. It almost sounds a little Architecture in Helsinki and whilst it doesn't have that get-up-and-dance appeal that the original has-it is a good listen. For the others....well you'll just have to get Grand for yourself.

Royksopp vs. The Presets

Does anyone else feel that the cover art of Royksopp's 3rd album Junior is very much channeling The Presets? It is the first thing I thought of and am wondering if it is intentional. On top of this the second track off the CD is called "The Girl and the Robot." Hmmmm, coincidence? I think not. Lets just hope that the March 23 release is as strong as this 2004 classic...early signs from single Happy Up Here are promising.

Destination Digital Love Revisited

I have always been particularly partial to the softer, cleaner and more melodic Daft Punk tunes. So when I heard something that to me sounded very similar to the soft robotic tones of Digital Love I thought maybe Daft Punk had returned and I had missed the hype. But I knew this would be impossible. Instead it is Damn Arms who I think I remember seeing in support of Cut Copy at The Metro a few years ago and really loving. If you like Destination check out the second installment of the track released on Bang Gang 12 Inch.

Girl Talk @ The Forum 30.01.09

A Girl Talk show has quite a few gimmicks. Firstly, there is his name.
It's really Greg Gillis. Secondly, he comes on stage wearing full 'sweats' in
Sydney 30+ degree heat. Though in his defence, he does slowly undress
during his one hour performance. Thirdly, at every show he gets twenty
or so kids from the audience up on stage to dance, and stand
awkwardly, around his laptop. Personally, I like this element as it
gives me something to look at when no Girl Talk antics are going on.
However, there were others in the crowd who didn't appreciate the
impromptu show from the Supre set, who had a hard time keeping their
chests out of poor Greg's face (see video).

Gimmicks aside, the gig was everything you would expect from listening
to a Girl Talk album. He mixed the tracks from Feed the Animals
seamlessly amongst about twenty minutes of new material. This new
stuff was fun, though with notable tracks including MGMT's Kids,
Beyonce's Put a Ring on It and Kanye West's Love Lockdown it did feel
a little bit like the Kids Choice Awards. Interestingly, Kanye's new
direction did stop the room dancing for the first and only time which
suggests that the punters agree with the critics bagging of his new
album.

Gillis is a natural performer as he bounces endlessly from left to
right on his long skinny white boy legs. His rapid five second samples
have often earned him the ADD label. This is very much supported by
his show, one minute he is standing up on his decks and throwing up
cute little handfuls of confetti, next he is MCing over his music
before diving into a solid crowd surf. At times such showmanship helps
to stop the feeling that we are just listening to a Girl Talk CD very
loudly, in a room full of sweaty people. That said, Girl Talk really
knows how to throw a party and at the very least you would have a hard
time finding anyone who didn't have a whole heap of fun at his show.
