The rumour mill has started. Modular's annual "festival" Nevereverland is set to return for 2008. But hang on? It's already October. The schedule for November is already chockers with heaps of big name gigs. NYE is set and sold. And even BDO tickets have come and gone. So how exactly does Modular plan to fit in to our lives? Both in terms of time AND money...as the credit cards get fuller and fuller.
The second question is...HOW is Nevereverland going to pull us in? The promotional video makes this point painstakingly clear. Who or What could possibly beat last years Daft Punk? In 2007 the Modular kids pulled the infuriating stunt of telling punters they had to get in early or risk missing out on access to the main field. They lied. Why did they do this? To make sure there was actually more that 5 people watching Plug In City and Muscles warm up the stage. I would bet there would be a fair few people out there who don't even know what Nevereverland is, even though they saw Daft Punk. in Australia. last year. All of this really means that a Modular festival won't be nothing without the robots. Ladyhawke, Cut Copy, The Presets, Van She etc etc. They're all great. But bless, they're still very much support acts and their pulling power, even as a massive group, is not enough for a memorable festival in this highly saturated market. The rumour mill says maybe Tiesto is coming back for this. Somehow I don't like the odds of the biggest techno D.J. in the world being brought down under by a small (but amazing) electro focused record label. Especially as Modular made a AU$6 billion loss in 2007.
