Tame Impala are not disco. They're not electro. They're not even really pop. What they are is psychedelic stoner rock that sounds like it was stolen straight out of the 70s. Isn't it funny how something that is so influenced from the past can sound so refrshing and new?
Anyway, I feel stupid because Tame Impala are just so so so so so so good, but cos I was expecting something different I couldn't appreciate it. Moral of the story: put your expectations aside.
I saw them play on Wednesday and they blew my mind. These boys love to play and you could tell that if they could they woulda stayed up there all night. Half way through Desire Be, Desire Go they just started jamming away for a good 5 minutes just playing monster riff after monster riff. They also gave a soulful and catchy version of the classic Remember Me (I'm the One Who Loved You). Their interaction with the crowd was minimal, but I suppose this is part of their stoner mystique and the fact that they were all barefoot made up for it in my mind. They finished off with the second single of their self titled debut EP Half Full Glass of Wine and just for fun they rotated clockwise: the drummer dubiously thumbed away at the bass, the bassist gave the guitar a pretty good go and the guitarist played the kit. And surprise surprise it still sounded good, cos like I've said before you can't actually be in a band these day unless you can make music on every instrument under the sun.

About six months ago I heard that Modular had put a new Perth band on their label. I got a bit excited as I imagined a fresh fusion of all things Presets and Cut Copy. So when I first heard Desire Be, Desire Go I must confess to a great deal of disappointment. Don't I feel stupid now.
